Snapshot — PhD and ECR onsite visits and engagement with industry (2024)

In-person, on-site experiences with industry provides context for research and enables PhD and ECRs to have a fuller understanding of workplace and commercial realities associated with minerals processing and mining.

Member visits to mine-sites and industry locations in 2024 include: 

  • Rio Tinto’s Bundoora Technical Development Centre (Vic) – research presentations to industry and learning more about on-site operations. 
  • In addition, Mark Coghill from Rio Tinto provided resume feedback 
  • Greenbushes lithium ore (spodumene) mine (WA), owned by Talison Lithium 
  • Stoney Pinch Sands (SPS) quarry (SA), a leading supplier of high-quality sand including dolomite and fine silica for agricultural and glass uses 
  • Australian Tin Resources’ Ardlethan Tin Mine (NSW) — to inspect their RC™ installation and research discussions 
  • Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group (NCIG) site at Kooragang Island (NSW) re: collaborative research 
  • Mt Pleasant Minesite (NSW) re: tailings utilisation 
  • Monash researchers ECR Dr Tina Hsia and PhD Yuxi Liu, along with UOM PhD Daniel Dodoo, utilised the state of the art research equipment at ANSTO’s Australian Synchrotron at various times during 2024, working closely with UniSA CI Marta Krasowska and other COEMinerals colleagues while there
